What You Never Wanted To Know But Constantly Dared To Ask

(by MS, Timeless)
Frequently asked questions or "How do I do this?"

How do I flash my BIOS? (the instructions are written for the Award BIOS but any other BIOS will abide by similar rules).
Just follow the procedures step by step then there shouldn't be a problem:

  1. Create a directory on your HD and call it BIOS
  2. Download the necessary file from the motherboard manufacturer into the new BIOS directory
  3. The files are usually self-exploding so unzip the downloaded x.exe file. All newly created files should remain within the BIOS directory. In the directory you should see one file called awdflash.exe or some similar file name (they can be a53flash.exe or whatever). Another file in the directory should be the actual BIOS file which is named e.g. 569wq09.bin (this is a fictive name but I needed an example)
  4. Take a piece of paper and write down the name of the flash utility file and the name of the BIOS file including the .bin extension (it can also be a .rom extension).
  5. Turn off the computer, do not just reset because then you will still thave some files in your memory. Flashing the BIOS is a memory intesive application and you don't want to have anything resident in your RAM.
  6. Restart the computer holding down Ctrl + F5 for a strip-boot, you will get the message "Windows is bypassing all your startup files" and you end up at the DOS prompt.
  7. Type in "cd BIOS" which will get you to the BIOS directory.
  8. Type the name of the flash utility (awdflash.exe or similar). This will get you to a dialog box in which the system will first examine your CMOS.
  9. The dialog box will give you an O.k. message and ask you to enter the name of the file to program.
  10. Type in the name of the file as you have it written down on your piece of paper, USE CAPITAL LETTERS and do not forget the .BIN extension.
  11. You will be asked if you want to safe the old bios  in a file, The answer is YES, call it OLDBIOS.BIN and do not forget the .BIN extension.
  12. Finally you will see a progress bar and the messages: Programming BIOS, do not disturb and do not turn off the computer.
  13. When everything is done (the whole process takes about 20 sec) you will be asked to restart your computer and you are in business.
  14. Good luck.
