After trying out different ways to get the desired shape and finish out of the raw couplings, here is the probably easiest and least expensive way of going about it:

CAUTION!!! If the vise is tightened to hard, it will squoosh the coupling and the sawblade will get stuck in the cut.
Continue cutting through the bottom of the coupling but make sure that the two halves are not separated completely. The final result should look like this:

Sorry but the autofocus of the digital camera was kind of irritated by the thread inside the coupling. Still, the picture shows the essential feature, a coupling that is 95% cut in half with enough flesh remaining on one side to keep the pieces together.
