SHORTCUTS:
What You Need
Getting Started
Cutting The Fins
Finishing Touch
 The $6.40 Question, er, Solution
A short roundup
(Review by MS, January 9, 2002)
You Are Almost Done

All you need to do is to take the coupling and now break it apart. This should be easy enough. Take each half and put it in the vise as shown below to do the "clean-cuts".

TIP: Don't tighten the vise too much!!!

All you need to do is to gently pull the hacksaw once or twice through the already established cuts to clean out the edges.

Lapping

Lapping is easy, just put a sheet of medium sandpaper on the workbench, put the headsink on it and move it around a few times in a figure-8 movement. The finish is done by a few longitudinal moves

Note the ridge where the break was.

Turn the block upside-down and repeat

You are done (Larger Than Life).

All you need to do is get some thermal epoxy (actually a simple double sticking Scotch tape works) to glue the heatsinks on the memory chips. Please note that your video card will weigh about twice as much now.

The result after repeating the procedure 4 times is shown here. Now you have a unique graphics card, that is, until everybody else does the same.
