Behind the Buzzwords

WinBench98 Business Performance

We already looked at the theoretical throughput in synthetic benchmarks, so now it is time to pull out some real world applications and look what is going on there. Winbench is probably a better indicator of any given drive on any interface than whatever synthetic benchmark just scrolls through the platters and measures access and response times.

WinBench98 Drive Playback is subdivided into the Business and the so-called High-End suites, the latter has been renamed by now to ContentCreation.

Disk Playback Business, Overall: [kB/sec Transfer] The scores are averages of the individual benchmarks and a preview of things to come. Note that the nominally slower IBM drive outperforms the Maxtor drive, especially when both drives are running off the IDE interface. Benchmark results that reflect the performance using the Maxtor/Promise ATA133 PCI adapter are denoted with the PCI suffix. In this case, the differences between both drives are rather small. However, in contrast to synthetic benchmarks, there is a more than 25% performance increase when using the ATA133 adapter. Keep in mind that these scores are averages of several individual benchmarks.

Disk Playback Business: Browsers

Disk Playback Business, Browsers: [kB/sec Transfer] In this particular application, the 60GXP literally outperforms the D740X. The difference between the fastest combo and the slowest is no less than 75% gain.

Disk Playback Business: Publishing

Disk Playback Business, Publishing: [kB/sec Transfer] The 60GXP is still ahead of the D740X but the differences are not as pronounced as in the "Browsers" benchmark. Again the external Promise controller gives both drives a huge performance boost.
