 Zalman CNPS7000-Cu
Copper Flower Power
(Review by MS, March 20, 2003)
Design details

The cooler itself consists of 65 "double sided" fins that are pressed together in the center by means of two aluminum blocks to form the "Flower". As a consequence, the base is not a solid structure but a stack of 65 thin layers of copper. From a thermal standpoint it hardly matters, though, whether it is a solid block or not as long as there are no gaps

Left to right: top view, bottom view and close-up on the contact area with the CPU. The fit between the individual lamellae is so tight that even under extreme viewing angles it is not obvious that the center is not a solid block. A word of warning, whatever you do, do not open the hex screws holding the aluminum "vise" in place, the result will be irreversible misalignment of the individual fins. (Click thumbs for larger images).

Left to right: A different top perspective of the unit as it ships, that is, fully assembled. As it turned out, the clip's tension was not strong enough to ensure good contact with the CPU and we had to take the assembly apart by removing two screws (DO NOT OPEN THE Hex-SCREWS THAT HOLD THE FINS TOGETHER). Subsequently, it is possible to lift out the entire fannage including the mounting clip, leaving the topless beauty behind. (Click thumbnails for larger pictures).
