YOU BOUGHT A NEW COMPONENT, NOW WHAT?
How do I install this correctly without damaging my previous setup?
(Review by MS)

Mistake #3: On the bottom of the drive, the connector pins are labeled, on one side, usually towards the four-lead power conector, it says 1-2. On the other side, towards the jumper, it should read 39-40. Make sure that you know the orientation before you continue.

Now it is time to slide the new drive into the bay, not quite. Once the drive is installed, it is almost impossible to attach the sound cable. Also, there are several different industry standards for the sound cable wiring, so make sure that you use the one included with your CDROM. As long as the drive is still outside the case, it is no problem at all to attach it. Now it is really time to insert the drive into the bay and to fasten it with the screws that came with the drive. Note that most drives use the same thread for the holding screws but there are exceptions. If you use the screws included with the drive, there will be guaranteed no problems.

Insert the ribbon cable. Most ribbon cables have a little notch on one side of the drive connector and almost all drives have a little slot in the upper center of the cable connector where the notch fits in like a tongue and groove. This way, it is almost impossible to reverse the orientation of the cable but the only way of knowing for sure is to have the red stripe on the ribbon cable facing pin #1.

The last cable to insert is the power cable. Don't worry, there is only one way it fits in so there is basically no way of doing anything wrong.

When we removed the old drive, we disconnected the sound cable from the drive and not from the sound device and here is why. Most sound devices have three or even four input connectors and only one is specified for the CDROM. Since the old cable is still attached to either the soundcard or else the on-board sound, just plug in the new cable coming from the CD into the same connector.

Now you are all set and it is time to try out the new drive. Time to close the case, hook it up to the power and turn on the computer. This would be:
