The third point concerned the quality of certain mouses I dealt with, the clicking mechanisms were too crude, I want something really smooth where I can adjust the clicking interval as well as the strength of the click. In addition, a scrolling wheel is a nice feature, even though I almost liked the little slider on the Genius Webmouse better.
The solutions: The "dirty mouseball" problem can be avoided by getting one of the new "optical mouses" made by Microsoft, Logitech and a few other manufacturers. These mouses are a bit on the expensive side and there are certain drawbacks to them as they react more slowly than a standard mouse. In most applications, it doesn't matter too much but in some games like "Unreal Tournament" or "Quake3 Arena" the difference can be a question of life or death. Bottomline is that I stayed with a conventional mouse, at least with regard to the tracking mechanism.
The one part, however, that I didn't skimp on was the annoying mouse cable. Having tried the mouse cord Bungee and finding it only a partially satisfactory solution, I decided on trying one of the new cordless mouses. Believe me, I won't go back to another mouse, the difference in comfort that it makes for me is worth the extra $20 and the cost of changing the batteries once every 6 months. Small things can make a huge difference.
