SiSoftware Sandra
SiSoft Sandra is one of the most reliable memory bandwidth tools available and reveals only small differences between individual runs. Therefore we were somewhat stunned when we found the following results in consecutive runs without any changes whatsoever in the system configuration:

These results are more than baffling, on the other hand, there could be an issue with memory fragmentation or simply that Sandra does not like DDR2. Things got outright scary, though, when we continued benchmarking the system:
At this point, there was no obvious explanation of what was going on, so we continued digging.
