 AMD Athlon64 3400+
The speed bump that was more
(Review by MS, January 6, 2004)
AMD Athlon64 3000+ At:
Sysmark 2004

The newest edition of BAPCo's performance benchmark is, as usual, divided into Internet Content Creation and Office Productivity. The applications used for Sysmark2004 are:

Internet Content CreationOffice Productivity
Adobe After Effects 5.5
Adobe Photoshop 7.01
Adobe Premiere 6.5
Discreet 3ds max 5.1
Macromedia DreamWeaver MX
Macromedia Flash MX
Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9 Series
Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5
Microsoft Access 2002
Microsoft Excel 2002
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
Microsoft Outlook 2002
Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
Network Associates McAffee VirusScan 7.0
ScanSoft Dragon Natural Speaking 6
Winzip Computing Winzip 8.1

It is somewhat interesting that the bulk of applications used by Sysmark2004 are Adobe and 3ds max that have been known historically to favor the P4 but let's see what the benchmarks will come up with.

The last versions of Sysmark were disastrous for all AMD processors but this has changed. The P4 Extreme Edition still has a lead but the spread amongst the top 5 candidates is in the order of less than 10% which is in no relation to the price delta.

Most of the results don't need any explanations but keep in mind that the 3100+ is a unreleased CPU running at 1800 MHz, whereas the 3000+ (not included here) is running at the same speed as the 3200+, only with 1/2 of the L2 cache.
