 AMD Athlon 64 FX-51
New Frontiers
(Review by MS, September 23, 2003)
Test Configuration

A brief foreword with respect to the I/O configurations used: The test system provided by AMD featured two Western Digital Raptor 10k drives. Those drives are bridge solutions and as such, there is not much point in using them on a native SATA controller as implemented e.g. in Intel's ICH5(-R). Instead, we were using a pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 native SATA drives on the Canterwood / Springdale platform, which we believe, provide the same level of performance in a RAID-0 configuration. The only benchmark amongst those used in this review, where this would matter anyway is Business Winstone 2002 and it is a judgement call of weighing best performance / platform against conformity in the benchmarks.

Because of the lack of a parallel port, several applications would not run on the ABIT IC7 Max3, otherwise, the results were indistinguishable from those obtained with the ASUS P4P800 (within the margins of noise).
