 AMD Athlon 64 FX-51
New Frontiers
(Review by MS, September 23, 2003)
Gaming Performance

Gaming performance is the major driving factor in the computer industry. Starting with FinalReality, VNU-Labs have created a number of benchmarks under the business name of MadOnion and now Futuremark to address the latest trends of hardware and software development in the gaming industry. These synthetic benchmarks are to be taken with a bit of cautiousness when it comes to graphics card evaluations since their ubiquity in reviews has established them as omnipotent powerfactors for marketing, until graphics manufacturers were caught with their hands in their pants or their cookiejars down. Nonetheless, everything being equal, 3DMark2001SE is still a valid benchmark for overall system performance, likewise, the CPU benchmark suite within 3DMark2003 has more merit than the overall composite score, in other words, the two benchmarks are a good place to start. All gaming benchmarks were run using the ATI RADEON 9800 Pro / Catalyst 3.7 for the sole reason of consistency of results compared to the issues with driver variations on the nVidia GeForceFX platform. This does not constitute any qualitative statement or preference towards ATI over nVidia.

3DMark2001SE

Considering how much dependent on the graphics card the scores are at the top end, a 1400 points delta is a huge victory for the Athlon 64 FX-51.

3DMark2003

As not expected otherwise, the composite score of 3DMark2003 hardly has any bearing on CPU performance.

3DMark2003-CPU

Looking at the isolated CPU scores once again establishes the Athlon 64 FX-51 as leader

3DMark2003-CPU1

3DMark2003-CPU2

The ranking is consistent throughout the different subcategories
