 AMD Athlon 64 FX-51
New Frontiers
(Review by MS, September 23, 2003)
Aquamark3

The original Aquamark benchmark has been one of the strongholds for the Athlon in any form. Unfortunately, the game itself suffered from severe lack of Z-depth, in fact, using either stereo-glasses or the Dimension Technologies 3D flatpanel, we were unable to create any 3D effect at all and overall, my personal opinion about the visuals was that they are less than mindblowing. After a few discussions with the massive development team, we were thrilled to see that the subsequent versions ironed out these blemishes and, in fact Aquanox3 and its derivative Aquamark possess stunning visuals created by heavy use of DX8 and DX9 effects. In other words, there is little incentive for using the original Aquamark.

Aquamark3

The actual fps are tied closely between all systems and the differences are so minor that in real world situations, nobody would really talk about it.

Aquamark3- CPU Test

Aquamark consists of three different scores, that is the actual fps, the graphic (GFX) score and the CPU score. The GFX scores were the same as not expected otherwise with the same graphics card being used, however, the CPU scores show a much wider spread of results than the actual fps would have suggested. The P4 is the clear winner here but how relevant is this victory if the fps don't vary?

Comanche4

Comanche4 heavily depends on raw CPU power and memory latencies and used to be a homerun for the P4. Certainly, the tables have turned again.

X2-The Threat

X2-The Threat may or may not representative of the next generation of DX-9 games. The visuals are stunning and the benchmark appears to be able to discern between different levels of CPU power.
