 AMD's Phenom X4 9850 - Silicon Revision B3

Phenom X4 Power Consumption

As we showed in our original Phenom coverage, the NorthBridge featuring the L3 cache and the memory controllers constitute a major contributor to the overall power profile of the Phenom. In the case of the X4 9850, the NB is running at the same 2 GHz as in the original X4 9900, however, the core is running at a 100 MHz lower frequency. In addition, as we showed, AOD "red" vs. "green" makes a quite dramatic difference and by default the B3 silicon revision is runnig in "red" mode. Given these data points, where does the X4 9850 fit in?

Windows Idle (C'n Q enabled)

When idle, the 9850 clocks down its cores to 1250 MHz and the core voltage drops to roughly 1.1V. However, the NB frequency was not shown to change according to AMD's power monitoring tool. With roughly 30 W power consumption at idle measured before the VRM, the X4 9850's power consumption does not fall outside the expectations based on the 9900 and 9600 but the positioning of the 9850 compared to the two other Phenoms once again underscores the impact of the NB frequency on power consumption.

Max Load

Under full load, the core power consumption becomes a larger factor in the equation and the 9850 drops a bit further towards the 9600. Bottomline however is that running in "native performance mode" does not increase the power consumption compared to the patch / AOD solution.
