 A 5 Second Mod

The Tools

If we are not soldering we have to find another way to connect the two pins with each other and the easiest way is to use the old "Quick Grid" window defroster repair kit. Application of the repair compound requires some kind of tool, the brush included in the package is not suitable in this case.

It's a pin that does the trick, not to be confused with the "other" pin trick. For easier application of the compound, the tip of the pin is bent, hence it is easier to maneuver and, it moreover acts like a scoop for the compound.

All one needs to do is to dip the tip in the compound and then slide the bend over the PCB, it is best to use the space on the inside of the "spade"-shaped area where the extra pin is missing. Because of the insulation provided by the soldermask, there is no risk of shorting anything else.

It is best to shake up the compound a bit to make sure that there are no clumps and that it is well dissolved. In case the wrong pins are shorted together, it is very easy to remove the compound again by scraping it off. Please make sure that no metal tools are used for that. The best tool we found was a shaving of a fingernail, we repeated the procedure about a dozen times and there was no way of telling even under the microscope that anything was ever done.

Keep in mind that it is essential to make sure the orientation of the mainboard is correct. With any board featuring the CPU socket in the North-South orientation, the correct corner of the socket is in the lower right hand.

For a perspective of the orientation and the dimensions we are talking about we left the pin inside the "eye of the socket" pointing towards the bridge we just made.
