 AMD Athlon64 X2 "Toledo"
Dual Core on Single Die
(Review by MS May 9, 2005)
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Venice)

WorldBench5

WorldBench5 is a comprehensive suite of system and CPU benchmarks. Not all of the individual benchmarks are related to CPU power, we picked those that we believe are relevant for the matter at hand.

Photoshop 7.1

One thing to keep in mind is that not all filters in Photoshop are multithreaded, therefore, the improvements seen with a dual core are may vary from one benchmark within Photoshop to another. Regardless of that, the X2-4800+ takes a solid first place

Premiere 6.5

Adobe Permiere6.5 heavily relies on memory bandwidth and even though it is multithreaded, the total CPU utilization usually does not exceed some 60% total, meaning that the major benefit of the two cores will be in load balancing or toggling between the two cores. For the reasons outlined, it is not surprising that the 4800+ falls behind the 4000+, the 3800+ (in this case the Newcastle core), and the 3500+ (Winchester core).

Office XP

It is not so much the fact that the X2 4800+ wins this division, after all, who really cares about performance in office applications. Rather it is the fact that the X2 4800+ is way ahead of the hencetoforth fastest AMD processor and sweeps the formerly Intel-dominated benchmark -- by a hare's ass...
