| (Review by MS, October 1, 2002) |
On the surface, the new processor does not look any different than its older family members, we are still looking at the brown OPGA package and the Thoroughbred-B core. The L3 bridges are cut the same way as on the XP2200+ and not surprisingly yield the same 13.5 multiplier setting.

The label finally reveals the true identity of the new processor
A New Quantispeed Metric
For those interested in the conversion of QuantiSpeed ratings to real clock speed, the major difference from the older rating scheme is that it is no longer a 66 MHz increment in physical clock speed. That is, because of the higher bus frequency, we are now looking at an 83MHz to 100 MHz conversion. Personally, I couldn't care less but there are those interested in numbers, so why not spell it out.
Enough of a preamble here, time to get to the gist of the new CPU. We never thought it would be just another speed grade and of course, what we would have liked is to pit the XP2800+ against itself in a repetition of our previous performance profiling. Unfortunately, the XP 2800 + is not available in 133 MHz FSB flavor, we'll have to leave this topic for a future review (but then who would care except for the purpose of saying: "Didn't we say so?")
