A Neat Analyser

Theoretical memory benchmarks aside, one of the questions is how the different platforms are handling real data transfers and our long-time contributor Saulo Silva came up with what is best described as A Neat Analyser that polls the main system configuration as well as the OS and then generates a matrix that is large enough to exceed the CPU cache. This matrix is then checked for duplicate numbers which means heavy data traffic between the main system memory and the CPU. During the development of this benchmark we found that latencies have a strong impact on the outcome of the benchmark, which shows strong differences between different chipset types (e.g. ATI vs. Intel), and processor families (Intel vs. AMD etc).


A.N.A.

A.N.A. comprises three different benchmarks that vary with respect to the workload. On average, each run takes between 15 and 40 minutes (depending on platform and CPU) and the result is the number of seconds used to complete the task.

Runtime in seconds, lower is better. These results don't look very good for the DDR2 platform, close to 20% performance degradation using the "nominally" same processor between the i875 and the i915 platform and still 14 % between the i875 and the i925 chipset are rather disappointing. Keep in mind, however, that we were running everything at default latency settings and that there is some headroom for DDR2, even or especially with regards to latencies.
