CPU Power Consumption

One of our main focuses when looking at processors has been to isolate the CPU power from the rest of the system and look at the various aspects of power efficiency. That is, in addition to looking at Windows idle power which is a huge cost component in any environment where computers are running, we have been looking at full load power consumption along with application specific power consumption per task. A case in point was the power consumption per render pass in Caligari TrueSpace as shown on the last page. However, it is certainly also of interest to look at other aspects of power consumption as idle and full loadif for nothing else than to gauge the requirements for a power supply unit.

Overall, despite running on eight cores and displaying record-breaking performance, the power demands of the "Octopus" processors are well within the limits of what is tolerable. Arguably, performance has its price, and that includes power but regardless of whether it is Windows idle power or else full load, we have seen a lot worse in the past.
