Process Technology Roadmap
It is not without pride that Intel's process technology engineers talk about the latest developments. And then there are the marketing folks trying to bend Moore's law into reading "a new process every 2 years".
Even within the existing/emerging technology, there are a number of different CPUs for the desktop and the server along with the mobile environment. Presler, Conroe, Dempsey, Sossaman are just a few examples of the new terminology without which no true geek will be able to survive.
Names, though, are only superficial monikers, what really counts are the advantages and individual achievements of the different cores
Roadmaps subject to daily change aside, there are some rather impressive achivements in process technology that are implemented into the current fab process. Probably the most important step - in absence of Silicon-On-Insulator - is the differential scaling of devices (transistors) and interconnect technology. As everybody should know by now, the Presler die is fabricated on 300 mm wafers using 65 nm technology. However, the real achievement is the shortening of the transistor gates to 35 nm with an oxide layer thickness of a mere 1.2 nm.
