Low Power and Energy-Efficient CPUs from Intel and AMD
Core2 Duo E6300 vs. X2-3800+ (ADD) and X2-4600+ (ADO)
(Review by MS, August 20, 2006)

Gaming Performance Continued

Far Cry

We used a custom-recorded demo from the Steam level of FarCry where six bots are running around.

FarCry is a clear win for the Core2 Duo architecture. Even if the graph does not look like it, the E6300 performance scales almost perfectly with the core frequency, the one processor that falls a bit short of its projected score is the X6800 but since it is the fastest of the pack anyway, it really does not matter. Essentially the same scaling is seen in the AMD processor lineup - with the same "diminishing returns" as higher performance is achieved. Overall, for playability either CPU in this lineup has enough horse power.

We used a custom-recorded demo from the first level of COD2 at 640x480 resolution and "insane" number of bodies.

Call of Duty2 paints essentially the same picture as FarCry with the exception that for one reason or the other, the AMD architecture maxes out at about 75 fps. The only CPU below that is the X2-3800 but suffice it to say that the E6300 shows the same performance as the fastest AMD CPUs. Still, either CPU in this roundup has enough horse power to run COD2 to the point where the graphics card becomes the bottleneck.
