Another Hit And Run
(Review by MS, August 26, 2002)
Test Candidates

Since we do not have any of the new "B" core Thoroughbred AMD processors, we could only use data from the Athlon XP2200+. We feel that this would be inadequate and rather concentrate on getting the most performance out of the P4 2.8 and compare the different configurations with each other.

Test Configuration

  • Hardware
  • ASUS P4S533 (SIS 645 DX)
  • Intel Pentium4 2.8 GHz
  • ASUS V8460 Ultra Deluxe GeForce 4 Ti4600
  • 1 x 512 MB Mushkin PC3200 DDR
  • IBM 60GXP 20GB HDD
  • Shuttle 52x CDROM
  • Software
  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • AGP Driver v1.10.03
  • IDE driver v1.01.13
  • Detonator 29.17 drivers
  • 3DMark2001 SE
  • PCMark 2002
  • Comanche 4
  • Quake3 Arena
  • Codecreatures

Essentially, we are comparing three different settings on the same test platform, that is:

Vre was increased to 1.6 V and DDR voltage set to 2.7V to ensure stable operation at 3.149 GHz and 375 MHz DDR data rate at the lowest latencies available on the ASUS P4S533. At those settings, using the stock Intel-provided aluminum cooler, the system did not crash a single time.
