 Intel's P4 820D and 670
More Power to Duallies
(Review by MS September 3, 2005)
P4-670

3D Rendering: 3dsmax

3dsmax, formerly known as 3D Studio Max is probably the most widely distributed 3D Rendering software package out there. The latest versions, that is 7.0, feature better support for multithreading than the earlier versions (like 5.1 used here), which is the main difference for the benchmarks run here.

Single Pipe

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the 820 leaves the 670 in the dust. The low performance of the dual Opteron system is caused by incorrect ID-ing of the SMP system which results in single threaded running of the benchmark. Current versions of 3dsmax do not have this problem.

Underwater Environment rendering shows the same trend but also has the two Opterons running correctly.

Lightwave [8]

Even though it looks like the 820 and 670 are slow, keep in mind that they are pitted against some of the fastest systems out there and the performance is still far above that of any average system.

The animation of Aegypten has seemingly a problem with multiple threads (even though up to 8 parallel threads can be specified in the application control panel). Surprisingly, the 820 outperforms the 840 in both "D" and Extreme Edition. A new version of Lightwave will be released within the next 4 weeks and address these issues.
