Power Consumption
The numbers in the data sheet of the 840 are somewhat scary. A maximum ICC of 125A puts the power consumption of the P4-840 with or without HT into the 160W bracket (after subtracting the voltage droop as a current-dependent factor). In real life we cannot expect that kind of power consumption, even under what we consider 100% CPU load. Let's take a look at the different applications and the associated power draw.
Windows Idle
HyperThreading or not does not make a difference in power consumption, at least not for idling in Windows.
TrueSpace Revisited
In this case, we ran the Vase scene at 2xAA to speed things up a little bit [runtime in seconds, lower is better]
Power consumption in Watt, lower is better at "cold" CPU
Power consumption in Watt, lower is better at "hot" CPU. As it turns out, there is not much in terms of increased power as function of junction temperature increase in the case of the '840. At first glance this looks a bit counterintuitive, however, only a few seconds after startup, the '840" showed 67-68 centigrades in the HW-Monitor of the CMOS setup. In other words, there is not much headroom left for increasing temperature - and by extension, increased power consumption.
