The 955X Chipset
For the launch of the dual processor series, Intel has released a number of additional chipset spins that are pretty much based on the original 900 series design, albeit with minor variations. Flagship is the 955X chipset with support for DDR667 and HyperThreading, followed by the 945 chipset that is limited to DDR533 and does not support HyperThreading. Everything else is essentially the same as on the 925XE chipset, there is support for 1066 MHz bus support but, as mentioned, none of the current dual core CPUs will be able to capitalize on the advantages of the faster interface, courtesy of missing lower multipliers.

The actual hardware, that is the mainboard we used was Intels' own D955XBK board, as usual for Intel boards not too well endowed with overclocking capabilities but rock solid. One issue to be aware of is that this board will not even POST with a standard power supply, we tried a variety of those equipped with the 4-pin auxiliary 12V connector, albeit without success. Interestingly, it is not the CPU that might cause an overload condition on power-up (we tried the P4660 as well), rather it seems an issue with the mainboard proper. The OCZ 520ADJ Powerstream, on the other hand had no problems whatsoever with this system configuration.
Intel's D955XBK
Mainboard power is supplied through a 24-pin server class EPS connector. The quad phase VRM built around the AnalogDevices ... controller, with the AD3418 driver chips interfacing the On-Semi FET switches. The D955XBK has two PCIe connectors that look like 16x slots, however, electrically, the lower slot is only a 4x interface.
