Performance Continued
Ray tracing is one of the most powerful computer techniques to create photorealistic images of scenes that are created with objects and lighting effects. As an extremely CPU intensive application, ray tracing has not yet ben able to penetrate the average computer household and has been restricted to some professional users. Likewise, programs like the original POVRAY (Persistenc Of Vision Raytracing) were too difficult to use for the hobbyist. With software developers like Caligari and others offering different packages that are very intuitive and easy to use, there is a new market for creating visions that Mother Nature never intended.

Average rendering time for the scene shown earlier. There were no differences between the different Athlon XP 1800+ platforms, neither were there any differences exceeding the margins of error between the various P4 platforms. All numbers represent the mean of 5 runs timed manually with a stop watch. Off the record, for a clock by clock comparison, we underclocked the P4 to 1.2 GHz and achieved a run time of 4:50 min or 290 seconds.

How long does it take to convert a 50 MB AVI file into MPEG format?

Runtime in seconds. It is almost superfluous to comment on the results, except that the scores are shown only in full seconds. At equal clock speed, all Athlon XP 1800+ systems perform basically at the same level. All P4 Scores at 2.0 GHz
