WinBench99

The industry standard benchmark used for HDD performance evaluation is somewhat outdated but still very efficient in showing the real world performance of a drive. Keep in mind, however, that WB99 also heavily depends on the controller used, meaning that it is not possible to do a comparison of different drives unless the same controller is used. In fact, for any drive performance evaluation, it does not appear to make sense to use anything but the currently top performing controller, that is the SiliconImage 311X family. Any other controller, with maybe the exception of the Intel ICH5 (R), will most likely not show the real performance of a given drive.

WinBench99 2.0 Disk WinMark scores: Maxtor DiamonMax: red; Seagate Barracuda 7200.7: dark gray; Seagate Barracuda SATA-V: light gray. Overall, the DiamondMax is the fastest drive amongst the test candidates here. The FrontPage98 scores are scaled back by a factor of 10 to better integrate with the rest of the graph.
