 High Performance DDR DIMMs
Ups and Downs or "how do I keep my stick happy?"
(Review by MS, July 17, 2001)

The Test Candidates, 128 MB Density continued

Nanya

As of lately, VIA has started bundling DDR DIMMs with every chipset sold. The DIMMs are using Nanya chips for the very simple reason that Nanya is a subsidiary of Formosa Plastics which also controls VIA and FIC.

Nanya PC2100 (Singapore)

A single-sided 266 MHz CL2 Nanya PC2100 DIMM as shipped with an ASUS CUV266

Pay attention to the chip markings: packaging location is Singapore

Nanya Taiwan

Interestingly, even though the DIMMs have the same sticker as shown above, there is a subtle difference in the chips marking.

There is hardly any difference between the appearance of this DIMM and the one shown above. This DIMM also came bundled with an ASUS board

If one looks at the chip markings, one can see that there is an "S" in the bottom row and the packaging location is Taiwan.

Corsair

We went through the first batch of Corsair DIMMs which were based on Samsung chips and were not bad but they weren't too great either. This entire production line of PC2100 CL2.5 has since been discontinued and, even though they are included with the performance measurements, there is no point of showing more pictures of them. Instead, we delve right in and show Corsair's latest product, the 128 MB XMS 2400

A 128 MB Corsair XMS 2400 DDR DIMM. The DIMM uses a 6 layer PCB with 8 16Mx8 Micron chips placed alternating on both sides of the module. Note that from a technical point of view it is still a single sided (or correctly: single bank) module. These DIMMs are guaranteed to hit 150 MHz at CAS-2, hence the dubbing XMS 2400 (MB/sec peak bandwidth)
