The Ultra-X RST Pro PCI memory tester is a self booting PCI card that exercises the memory subsystem using a variety of patterns. In the past, our experience with RST Pro has been that it is an extremely reliable tool that, moreover, allows detailed diagnostics and root analysis of failures as described in detail here. Briefly, RST-Pro generates a matrix of the memory array, hilighting the failing addresses. Depending on the reproducibility and pattern of the failures, it is then possible to pinpoint the source of the problems to either a bad IC or a weak PCB or a combination of both.

The advantage over standard procedures (exiting of applications, failure to boot or POST) is that RST Pro picks up single bit errors that are extremely reproducible. Our test criteria were that at least one single suite of the different patterns used had to be absolved without errors. If errors occurred, we repeated the test suite to exclude any randomness. If errors were recurrant, they were noted, if not, the frequency was raised until errors occurred. Since any weighting of errors as being more or less significant would introduce some additional bias, only runs with zero errors were accepted as passing criteria.
