Memory Performance

Memory performance on the Athlon64 platform is essentially a matter of the processor rather than the chipset or the mainboard. Certain restrictions apply as the latencies will still influence the overall scores, likewise, the memory performance will depend on the external clock speed of the board and here is where different boards may differ to begin with. That is, by default, the KV8 MAX3 will run at 204 MHz rather than the specified 200 MHz. We found a similiar scheme with the ASUS K8V Deluxe that was running at 205 MHz as well, only in that case, at least with the 1002 BIOS, it was not even possible to lower the external clock input. All comparative benchmarks shown in the following are, therefore, run at 205 MHz external CPU clock.

Integer (red) and FPU (gray) memory bandwidth for both ABIT KV8 MAX3 and ASUS K8V Deluxe at the same clock speed (205 MHz External Clock).

Latency

We used Cachemem 2.65 MMX and, not surprisingly, at identical latency settings and speed, both boards returned almost indistinguishable values. The only difference was a 1 ns lower access latency across the board at the 32 byte stride for the ABIT board

Even side by side, it was impossible to tell the two plots apart, the only way to know who-is-who is to look at the raw Excel data.
