 ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
nForce2 at its best
(Review by MS, December 2, 2002)
What You Get

It is a bundle and the bundle contains anything one needs to take advantage of the feature set supported by the platform. In brief, aside from the standard ribbon cables, that is, one floppy, one 40 wire UDMA and one 80 wire UATA cable, the box contains two IEEE 1394 Firewire cables along with the necessary backpanel bracket, one additional Serial port and one combo panel featuring the game port / midi interface along two additional USB 2.0 ports. All of this is documented with the typical ASUS perfectionism in the printed manual, as a back-up or for those who are too lazy to read the whole thing, a quick reference card is included and since three is the lucky charm, we still have a polyglot Quick Setup Guide. For those who are notorious for losing the accessories and manuals, ASUS even ships a sticker with a completely labeled mainboard layout.

The "Bundle" by numbers: floppy, 40 wire, 80 wire ribbon cables and serial port #2 (1). USB and MIDI ports (2). Firewire backpanel bracket (3). Two firewire port connector cables (4). Two Serial ATA cables (5)

The manual itself is in the typical ASUS fashion very thorough but in the BIOS parameter chapter, somebody must have really gotten creative to substitute some fancy-sounding albeit nonsense gibberish for what used to be about the only correct explanations of latencies in the entire business. My advice to ASUS, look at your old manuals and put the correct explanations back in place.

The installation CD has all necessary drivers for the full installation. Even so, it happened that a day after receiving the board here, nVidia released new chipset drivers. Bottom line is that regardless of the drivers included on any CD, it always pays to check the chipset manufacturer's webpage for the latest drivers. The only shortfall of the bundle is the omission of a driver floppy that is needed for a fresh install of Win2K or XP on the SATA interface, along the same lines, the readme file on the CD has the wrong information.
