Quake3 Arena and Overclocking

We had a few glimpses at the Quake3 Arena performance already in the ATI FireGL 8800 review but we skipped the overclocking part. Usually, it is possible to run SiSoft Sandra on a halfway dead system (we have seen some exceptions, though) but that doesn't necessarily mean that the same system will be stable in other applications. In this case, we encountered a similar situation, that is, the CPU that would get into Windows at 150 MHz and run Sisoft Memory benchmark would crash in Quake3 Arena and other more demanding applications. The reason why I am blaming it on the CPU is the fact that the same happened on any other system I tried the very same CPU on. I won't post benchmarks that are not replicable due to stability issues, therefore, the highest scores shown will be run at 145 MHz FSB which still corresponds to 2755 MHzclock speed which is not to shabby either.

For those who like these screen shots. There is nothing special about this setup, all voltages are at default without "overvoltage" enabled, a standard Intel "all-aluminum" heatsink, LAN and Sound enabled. The system was a bit unstable at this speed but the particular CPU used has problems above 1775 MHz. Anyway, I figured, it is worth showing.

Quake3 Arena Demo_four (retail version upgraded to Point Release 1.30). Those scores are plain and simply out of this world and defy any constraints in playability. We didn't quite make it to the 500 fps barrier yet, maybe next week.... Note that nothing was turned off except for the sound, these are the standard settings.

As mentioned on the last page, we already have a ton of benchmarks on this board so I am heading on to the conclusion of this review
