 DFI 855GME-MGF and Intel Pentium M 735
Along came a Dothan
(Review by MS, Jan 2, 2005)

Multitasking Action: Sysmark2004

In contrast to WorldBench5, Sysmark 2004 does not test individual applications but rather generates composite scores within two different categories, namely Internet Content Creation and Office Productivity, all of which are heavily multitasked with different weighing of the individual applications and changing workloads for each. Because of the multitasking nature of the benchmark, the P4 with its HyperThreading may be favored, moreover, rumor has it that the coincidence of the business address with that of Intel is more than just a random event. This said, we expect the P4 Netburst architecture to excel in Sysmark2004 but how will the Dothan fare here? That is, within the framework of caveats outlined above...

The individual applications used at one glance:

Internet Content CreationOffice Productivity
Adobe After Effects 5.5
Adobe Photoshop 7.01
Adobe Premiere 6.5
Discreet 3ds max 5.1
Macromedia DreamWeaver MX
Macromedia Flash MX
Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9 Series
Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5
Microsoft Access 2002
Microsoft Excel 2002
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
Microsoft Outlook 2002
Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
Network Associates McAffee VirusScan 7.0
ScanSoft Dragon Natural Speaking 6
Winzip Computing Winzip 8.1

Hyperthreading rules the Sysmark2004 overall score but the PentiumM does hold its own by almost tying the Athlon64 4000+

If we look at the two main categories, the Pentium M at 2.26 MHz actually beats all AMD processors and even a few of the Prescott and Extreme Edition CPUs running at much higher clock frequency and, inevitably, price point.

Office productivity remains over and again a stronghold of the P4 without much competition from either the mobile or the AMD camp

The overall score and also the category summary scores are a bit hard to interpret, therefore, we are going to look at some of the individual rankings for 2D Creation, 3D Creation and Web Publication next.
