Centerpiece of this entire review is of course the 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium4 478 Pin CPU

All applications were run in Windows98 (first edition). For reference in some benchmarks the following systems were used:
| VIA KT266A reference board AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.2 GHz MSI StarForce 822 (GeForce3) 1x 256 MB Mushkin PC2100 DDR SDRAM IBM GXP60 (20 GB) HDD AMD 2700TX Fast Ethernet Adapter | Tyan Tiger 2 x AMD Athlon Palomino 1.2 GHz MSI StarForce 822 (GeForce3) 1x 256 MB Mushkin registered PC2100 DDR SDRAM IBM GXP60 (20 GB) HDD AMD 2700TX Fast Ethernet Adapter |
* The one thing I couldn't get were C-RIMMs and in order to populate all slots as necessary, I had to use a total of 768 MB Rambus memory. This may have biased the outcome of the benchmarks somewhat in favor of the i850 chipset. For the Tyan Tiger, Windows2000 was used.
Performance: ASUS vs. MSI
From the Intel BX chipset boards as well as from the i8xx chipsets the general consensus is that there is extremely little performance variation between different boards and the Brookdale platform doesn't appear to be any exception from this rule. In all benchmarks, the ASUS P4B was marginally faster than the MIS 845 Pro2-R, the differences in benchmarks were in the order of 1-2 % regardless of whether we ran DOS-based benchmarks like Stream or gaming applications like Quake3 Arena. For reference, since a 1% difference falls within the margins of error, we show only the ASUS benchmark results, anyone interested in the performance of the 845 Pro2-R may simply subtract 1% from the results shown.
Glitches
Interestingly, under Windows98 neither the MSI nor the ASUS board would run 3Dmark2001, both boards terminated the benchmarks at the Lobby (low Detail) sequence, regardless of the drivers used (12.41, 14.70, 21.83). In addition, attempting to run 3Dmark2001 with either Brookdale-based board resulted in error messages on the next bootup with a complete scandisk with surface check every time.
This is somewhat remarkable since neither the D850MD nor the Shuttle AV40 showed any similar behavior, likewise, both Brookdale-based boards absolved the benchmarks flawlessly in Windows2000.
