AGP for AMD ...... and it's all in a cube

IDE Performance

Much has been said about the insufficient performance of the VIA IDE controller lacking throughput and capping bursts at around 110 MBps courtesy of a too low PCI latency and the lack of possibilities to park the bus on the respective interrupt for seamless back-to-back transfers.

HDTach 2.61

116 MB/sec burst transfer rates are pretty much saturating the bus, there is no doubt that the IDE interface, at least for this kind of application. This is as good as it gets and certainly shows off the UATA 133 capabilities of the controller.

Winstones

Luckily, Winstones require a defined screen resolution and color depth, otherwise the entire gamut of all permutations of resolutions would take weeks to run. In this case, we are confining ourselves to the mandatory 10x7 x 32bpp resolution.

Business Winstone 2001

Business Winstone 2001 scores using either the integrated graphics or else the RADEON 9700 in comparison to the same processor and component configuration but using the VIA KT400-based ASUS A7V8X with the memory running in DDR 2700 mode

Content Creation Winstone 2002

ContentCreation Winstone 2002 scores using either the integrated graphics or else the RADEON 9700 in comparison to the same processor and component configuration but using the VIA KT400-based ASUS A7V8X with the memory running in DDR 2700 mode

It is pretty clear where the bandwidth goes, moreover, both ContentCreation and Business Winstones require faster than 60 Hz refresh rates which adds to the bandwidth usage of the graphics controller. Likewise, a great portion of the additional performance of the A7V8X can be attributed to the higher memory bandwidth (2700 MB/sec) even though in streaming benchmarks the FSB will put a cap on the peak transfer rate as we showed in detail in this article.
