Winstones

If memory access latencies are better on a per CPU cycle basis, one could expect that the overall system performance will be relatively better at a lower clock speed. That is, instead of cutting performance in half by reducing the CPU frequency by 50 %, the performance will be substantially better than only 1/2 of the performance of the XP3200+ in the same system. The other way around, there have numerous data with respect to scalability and so on but it is the same issue as the glass that is either half full or half empty. Keep in mind, though that a glass that is half full will have to double its contents to become really full, whereas a glass that is full will only have to lose 50% in order to become half-empty.

Business Winstone 2002

In system applications that are using all sub components, that is, particularly the memory and I/O subsystems, cutting the clock in half only causes some 28% performance degradation. For comparison, the ASUS A7N8X running the otherwise same hardware configuration and the Intel D875PBZ (Canterwood) using the 3.0 GHz P4 are shown. Even though the "1600*" comes in last place, it is very impressive what it can do at only 1100 MHz real clock speed.

Content Creation Winstone 2003

The situation is slightly different when it comes to content creation, here the CPU is much more involved and, therefore, the overall score takes a much greater hit. Still, the performance is excellent considering that e.g. the P4 runs almost three times as fast. The AMD patch was applied for all three systems and APIC was enabled.
