A Cult Is Born

Finishing the Installation

After mounting the heatsink, which is easy enough, courtesy of the three-prong bracket, it is time to install the memory and attach the UATA cables before putting the drive bays back into place. The HDD cable only has two connectors, meaning that a single device only can be attached to the cable. The second cable is more interesting in that it is cut into several strands of interleaved data and ground and hence provides the flexibility of a rounded cable without the impaired shielding problems of some of the latter. The bottom of the drive tray features a clip that can be used to move hold up the primary IDE cable to avoid it getting caught in the chipset fan.

Two types of cable are supplied with the SS40, one of which is destined as a sole connection to a single hard disk drive, the second cable falling more into the multipurpose category. Note that the ribbon is sliced to make sure that always one data strand lies next to a ground/shield wire to avoid electrical cross talk between data channels.

The split cable should be routed as described in detail in the manual, that is, the chassis provides openings and clips specifically meant to guide this cable and tuck it out of the way, we'll have an illustration later.

A 200W 1U powersupply feeds the ATX power connector, the auxiliary plug on the mainboard as well as the drives or other peripherals.

All in all, it is about 30 min worth of work to install everything but while the case is still open, let's take a brief look at the power supply and how it is mounted. Compared to the SS50, the PSU in the SS40 is a big step up, instead of 160W we have 200 W and the 5V rail has been increased from 12A to a whopping 20A.

Now with everything installed that we really need it is time to put the cover back on, case closed.
