 Shuttle SS50 Cooling Upgrade Kit
PH4 Heat-Pipes for ultra quiet coolance
(Review by MS, October 2, 2002)
We all have to come to know and love Shuttle's minibarebone systems, starting with the SV24 over the SS50, the SS40 and the SS51G. Each iteration has become more proficient not only in terms of technical specs and performance but also with respect to fitting into the human habitat rather than an office space or work room. In detail, this requires not only a small form factor but also small numbers in terms of another space filler: Noise.

With the SS40, Shuttle added heat-pipe technology to its cooling repertoire, thereby reducing the number of fans from two, that is one exhaust and one heatsink fan to a single exhaust fan. Two fans make more noise than one, that one is kind of trivial but the other issue in this context is that the heatsink fan has to work against substantially more back pressure than a simple flow-through device, meaning that the overall performance as measured in cubic feet / minute or CFM has to higher to achieve the same net effect.

Higher CFMs in turn mean more noise and the most efficient step towards a quieter environment needs to encompass the elimination of the noisiest component: the heatsink fan. The result has been that the SS40 and SS51 were noticeably quieter than their predecessors.

Unfortunately, while the SV24, depending on the processor used, allowed passive cooling, the SS50 running a P4 is denied this privilege leaving owners of this archetype of a power shoebox stranded in the noise. Until now, we have good news in form of an upgrade kit converting the former dual fan setup into a heatpipe technology-based cooling kit that will sway even the most sophisticated silence aficionado.

The shipping box for the SS50 upgrade kit, detailed assembly and mounting instructions are on the back of the carton.
