Before the Start
The D-Link DI-701 comes with an easy to read reference poster – just follow the easy steps. The only thing to make sure about is that you use the crossover cable to connect from the DI-701 to the cable modem
Hardware setup
The above mentioned poster provides a step by step walk-through of the installation. Since the firewall itself takes over the role of the PC as link to the outside world, it is necessary to import the settings and to reconfigure the computer to link to the firewall instead. Sounds complicated? It really isn't. Instead of asking for another piece of paper to write down the original settings, the poster provides the necessary entry spaces, so you can actually write directly into it and have a permanent record of everything that was changed.
Reconfiguration of the DI-701 can be done in two different ways. The more complicated way is to use the serial cable and to telnet into the BIOS of the DI –701, however, there is a much easier way in that D-Link provides the customer with a little Windows program that accesses the DI-701 through the CAT-5 connection.
Trouble shooting and firmware upgrade
After the original setup of the D-Link 701, the network connection to the global end of the firewall failed to work. As it turned out, a firmware upgrade was necessary to ensure functionality.
The firmware update (basically a BIOS update) was sent to me via email, including a short instruction application note. Unfortunately, the first revision of the instruction text contained a few bugs and errors, including the wrong sequence of events as well as the incorrect file name of the update utility.
In short, here is a corrected version of the instructions that we sent back to D-Link customer support and marketing which is self explanatory:
Requirements
Hardware
- 1. A PC with at least one available COM port.
- 2. A pin-to-pin RS-232 cable (DTE-DCE): one end is DB-9 male connector, the other end is whatever depends on your COM port.
