 D-Link DI-701
Firewall (Review by Jaan S.)
| Top page | specs | installation | conclusion |

Features

The Local port is a RJ-45, 10/100 Dual Speed Ethernet. The Global Port is RJ-45, 10Mb Ethernet to an external broadband modem. The Console Port is a DB-9 female connector (serial port). The DI-701 also has numerous LED indicators on the front to show you what is happening or what is on or off...including power, local link, local speed 10/100, local full/half duplex, internet link, and/or error.

Included in the package are:

  • D-Link DI 701
  • Power supply
  • Driver CD with manual in PDF format
  • Crossover cable
  • Printed manual
  • Quick reference poster

Before the Start

The D-Link DI-701 comes with an easy to read reference poster – just follow the easy steps. The only thing to make sure about is that you use the crossover cable to connect from the DI-701 to the cable modem

Hardware setup

The above mentioned poster provides a step by step walk-through of the installation. Since the firewall itself takes over the role of the PC as link to the outside world, it is necessary to import the settings and to reconfigure the computer to link to the firewall instead. Sounds complicated? It really isn't. Instead of asking for another piece of paper to write down the original settings, the poster provides the necessary entry spaces, so you can actually write directly into it and have a permanent record of everything that was changed.

Reconfiguration of the DI-701 can be done in two different ways. The more complicated way is to use the serial cable and to telnet into the BIOS of the DI –701, however, there is a much easier way in that D-Link provides the customer with a little Windows program that accesses the DI-701 through the CAT-5 connection.

Trouble shooting and firmware upgrade

After the original setup of the D-Link 701, the network connection to the global end of the firewall failed to work. As it turned out, a firmware upgrade was necessary to ensure functionality.

The firmware update (basically a BIOS update) was sent to me via email, including a short instruction application note. Unfortunately, the first revision of the instruction text contained a few bugs and errors, including the wrong sequence of events as well as the incorrect file name of the update utility.

In short, here is a corrected version of the instructions that we sent back to D-Link customer support and marketing which is self explanatory:

Requirements

Hardware

  • 1. A PC with at least one available COM port.
  • 2. A pin-to-pin RS-232 cable (DTE-DCE): one end is DB-9 male connector, the other end is whatever depends on your COM port.
Software
  • 1. The upgrade program: FWLOAD.EXE - It's a DOS program. You can also run it directly from a DOS window within Windows NT/95.
  • 2. The image file of new firmware: FIRMWARE.BIN
  • 3. Unzip the di701-212.zip file into a new subdirectory on your hard drive, e.g. C:\DI-701 This directory should contain three files, the FIRMWARE.BIN, the UPLOAD.EXE and the upload.txt
  • 4. Open a DOS window and change to the newly created directory.

    Warning!!!!

Uploading the new FIRMWARE will erase all your previous settings. Please make sure that you have written them down before updating the new firmware.

    Upload procedures

    • 1. Connect the SOAR (DI-701) and your PC COM port with the RS-232 cable.
    • 2. Run the FWLOAD.EXE with COM port specified. The synatx is "FWLOAD 1" for serial port 1, "FWLOAD 2" for serial port 2. You will see the following messages appear -> DI-701 - Firmware upgrade program ver 2.0. Copyright 1999. FWLOAD? For usage help. Press to abort this program.
    • 3. While the program is searching for the device, turn on the DI-701. FWLOAD can automatically detect the DI-701 and complete the upload. If the DI-701 is already running, the program will not detect it, therefore it is necessary to turn it off before starting the FWLOAD program. You will see further messages appear in following sequence:
      • -> Waiting for the SOAR turned on . . .
      • -> The SOAR has been detected. -> Ready for upload.
      • -> Uploading . . . (increasing) -> 32768 bytes transmitted
      • -> OK: Firmware upload succeeded.
      • If you get an error, please check the cable connectivity and make sure that you have selected a correct COM port, then go through these steps again.
      4. Repower on the DI-701.5. If you had configured your DI-701 before the firmware update, you will need to do it again.
After updating the firmware, no more problems were encountered.
