 Xincom XC-DPG402
A Budget Wolf in Sheep Clothes
(Review by MS, July 23, 2003)
Update: 8/12/2003

Since we posted this review and our concerns about the lack of security, Xincom has come through with two consecutive firmware updates that enabled the missing log function as well as adding the stealth functionality. The firmware updates comprise two separate binaries that (05 and 06) that need to be run consecutively.

The upgrade procedure is as easy as it could possibly be, all that needs to be done is to enter the main configuration screen at 192.168.1.1 and select "Update Firmware" to open up a file browser and select the desired binary. After confirmation, the router updates the firmware and restarts. Total labor: 5 min for two updates.

After updating the firmware, we checked the log functionality and the port modes on GRC.com using the advanced port scanner for all ports from 1 to 1024.

Result of the advanced port scanning. Every single port is completely invisible to the outside world, 100% stealth mode. Particularly in view of the currently on-going MSBlast attack (scans for open port 135 and attacks computers even without going on the internet), this is a huge improvement over the older firmware, what is invisible cannot be attacked. Did I mention that I am paranoid about security?

Another issue that we like to hi-light is the very good responsiveness of the Xincom engineering team, any of our wishes or suggestions was handled expeditely, Two Thumbs Up.
