The Place for Networking

 Xincom XC-DPG402
A Budget Wolf in Sheep Clothes
(Review by MS, July 23, 2003)
Configuration

One issue to watch out for is that the default gateway address of the Xincom XC-DPG402 is 192.168.1.1 as opposed to the standard xxx.xxx.0.1. This is not a problem for anybody who reads the flyer or the full manual on the CD but only for those who are caught in their routines of setting the default gateway address to 192,168.0.1, in other words, only network administrators who know it all will have a problem here.

Keep in mind, though, that in order to access the router it may be necessary to run "wininicfg" or "ipconfig" from a DOS prompt in Win9x or NT kernel-based OS, respectively.

Since a stylesheet is used, the original table is blue but for simplicity reasons, we leave that part out, moreover, the screen, you see below pops up inside a frame. Despite the lack of color, we feel that using this format beats the (lack of) clarity of any screenshot. (the MAC addresses were manually overwritten).

All in all, on any DHCP-based connection, setting things up is a matter of no more than 5 minutes tops, if static IPs are used, it may take a bit longer, depending on the typing skills (since the DNS and IP numbers need to be entered manually).

One thing we could not locate was a log for attacks / intrusion attempts, however, the advanced settings allow to specify email notification of any attack. Overall, the configuration utlity is very intuitive and should not pose any problems for the basic configuration, for the more advanced features, it is back to RTFM (read the ... manual), since we cannot reproduce 20some pages here and go into all gory details.
