 CES 2004
You Gotto Say Yes To Another Excess
(by MS, January 15, 2004)
Seagate
Barracuda

Monster Audio

As already mentioned, a huge portion of CES was simply dedicated to audio in any form, and amongst our favorite form factors are the souped-up muscle cars with NOS boosters and / or the most exquisite paint jobs anyone can dream up. If you thought you had seen them all, you ain't seen nothing yet. Needless to say that the motto was literally "you gotto say yes to another excess" as there were even motorcycles with built-in surround-sound - DVD systems. Else, the Dodge Dakota with the Viper Engine or a few Hummers ..... Cult objects? Maybe. Expensive? Definitely!

Pictures Of An Exhibition

Politics and Misconceptions

ABIT stirred up the rumor mill quite a bit with the release of their press statement regarding the irreconcilable differences between their own and nVidia's management and the move to power the Siluro Line of graphics cards with ATI GPUs in the future. The main reason cited was the issue of using custom drivers featuring dynamic overclocking and similar features that apparently went against the grain of approval at nVidia. Behind the scenes, it appears as if there were a few other things brewing but let's leave it at what is officially known.

Scott Thirlwell giving the ABIT presentation at the Satelite CyberX Gaming event. (we tried the extortion scheme in exchange for not posting this picture but... )

It is necessary though to also know that the split between ABIT and nVidia, despite all the hype only concerns the line of GPUs, meaning that ABIT will further develop and distribute nForce2 and nForce3 mainboards for the AMD platforms.

Interesting in this regard is also the push-pull relation between ABIT and DFI with Scott Thirlwell moving to DFI and back to ABIT in the recent past and Oscar Wu now being fully on board with DFI where he is partially responsible for the overwhelming success of the latest builds of DFI boards in the overclocker community.

Overall, it was fun being there, catching up with everyone, driving around in the Shuttle Hummer and having a good time.
