 3DLabs Wildcat VP990
512 MB LFB but...
Whatever Happened to the Specs
(Review by MS, August 1, 2003)

3DStudioMax

In the beginning of this review, we mentioned the dichotomy of the professional graphics market into CAD and Cinematic rendering along with the suggestion that the 3DLabs Wildcat VP family is probably most suited to compete on this very turf rather than trying to compete with the superfast competition based on either the Quadro or the FireGL cores. 3DStudioMax by Discreet is one of the mainstream rendering software packages that can be considered almost entry level compared to other rendering suites offered by Discreet. We mentioned it occasionally in earlier reviews, some of the high-end graphics programs, especially those used to generate special effects, are not even to be purchased but need to be licensed on a weekly basis for the price of a subcompact car and this is where performance really turns into huge fiduciary savings.

We ran the Wildcat VP990 Pro through the entire benchmark suite provided on the learning and training CD included with the commercial version of 3DSMax. All benchmarks were run at the default settings, that is at 1024x768x32 bpp. However, we also checked the impact of the memory frequency on the overall performance in 3DStudioMAX by increasing the memory frequency to 165 MHz while leaving the core speed untouched and some of the results simply fall into the "mindboggling" category.

4Viewports

All four viewports are rendered simultaneously.

Frames per second, higher is better

8 Direct

Frames per second, higher is better

8Omni

Frames per second, higher is better

8Spot

Frames per second, higher is better

The Wildcat wins the 8Direct lights, everything else goes more or less to the Quadro4 and the overclocking results, even though they are not consistent between benchmarks speak for themselves.
