No Reason for Panic on the Titanic

Performance

The Titanium series is an evolutionary step up from the already known GeForce3 and, therefore, one cannot expect miracles. Of course, the additional core and memory speed will increase performance in applications not held back by the CPU or memory subsystem as bottleneck, on the other hand, there are limitations of how much performance can really be improved. This holds particularly for real world gaming applications whereas, in synthetic demos, the gain is much greater, particularly under overclocked conditions.


Test Setup

The test configuration was as follows:

Best results were reached with the 12.40 drivers. All other drivers gave similar results (12.90, 14.70, 21.81, 21.83, 22.80 and 15.70) but results shown are based on ver. 12.40.

The Trivia

DVD decoding was flawless on the system which is only mentioned for reason of completeness.

Gaming performance (D3D)

In applications that are not demanding on the graphics processor like Incoming or Expendable, that is, applications that stress neither the fill rate nor the texturing and which are further depending solely on the CPU and memory subsystem, there is virtually no difference between a standard GeForce3 and a Ti 500. For the record, both cards scored identical frame rates of 445 fps and 152 fps in Incoming and Expendable, respectively.

3DMark2001

3DMark2001 is a homerun for the Ti500 compared to the standard Geforce3.

3DMark2001 scores of the Starforce 822 as typical representative of a standard GeForce3 graphics adapter.

3DMark2001 scores of the ASUS V8200 T5 as representative of the GeForce3 Ti500 series.

Did we manage to break the 10,000 points threshold? Not with this system but we came pretty close with overclocking the V8200 T5 to 280 MHz core / 580 MHz memory data rate.

Overclocked to 580 / 280 MHz (which may not even be the limit) we almost hit the 10K jackpot at 640x480 x 16 bpp.

It actually did take some more work, that is, cranking up the CPU to 1739 MHz to get these 3DMark2001 scores:

Overclocked to 580 / 280 MHz and 1739 MHz CPU clock speed at 640x480 x 16 bpp the 10,000 3DMark2001 barrier has become a thing of the past.
