 ASUS V8420 Pure / V8460 Ultra Deluxe
The Art Of Deception
(Review by MS, July 31, 2002)

ASUS V8420 Pure

When speaking of the ASUS V8420, the thing to bear in mind is that the same model number applies to two entirely different cards. That is, in the Asian and European markets, the V8420 is available also in Ultra Deluxe flavor which means the large PCB, 128 MB of BGA memory and VR (as in virtual reality) glasses next to the VIVO module as bundled features. For the US market, however, the V8420 is only available in the "Pure" flavor, meaning that the card is based on the typical Ti4200 PCB featuring 64 MB TSOP memory which by the very nature of its design is blessed with lower frequency but also comes at roughly half the price of the 4600.

Distinguishing feature of the V8420 is the heatsink that is found on both the "Pure" edition as shown here as well as on the "Ultra Deluxe" (not for sale in the US) using the full size PCB and BGA memory. Note that there is no jack for virtual reality

Unsupported Hardware

The meanest-looking VR glasses ever that will turn you from a nerd into Captain America, Peter Parker or the bug-man, depending on your preferences and capabilities. Unfortunately, these glasses that are bundled with the V8460 will not work with the V8420 "Pure" since there is simply no way of plugging them in.
