The Art Of Deception
(Review by MS, July 31, 2002)

Quake3 Arena

Since we are looking at graphics cards, we are certainly not interested in the low resolutions and start with a minimum of 800 x 600 and 32 bit color. Also, in order to look at fill rate limitations, a game like Quake3 Arena is probably the best way to go since the CPU can handle the game with relative ease. All timedemos were run without sound at the High Quality setting (800 x 600 x 32bpp) and only the resolution was changed.
Quake3 Arena Demo_four, 800 x 600 x 32bpp "High Qquality"

At low resolution, there is relatively little difference between the individual cards, the RADEON falls slightly behind the nVidia cards.

As the ressolution increases, so do the differences in the frame rates.

Quake3 Arena Demo_four, 1280 x 1024 x 32bpp

At 1280 x 1024, the higher memory bandwidth of the V8460 starts paying off in that the ASUS flagship runs away from the field

Quake3 Arena Demo_four, 1600 x 1200 x 32bpp

At 1600 x 1200, the trend is just getting more obvious.
