DroneZ
DroneZ is one of these benchmarks that can blow you away if you watch it for the first or second or even fiftieth time. However, the benchmark is not really suitable for cross-platform comparison since the benchmark is actually smart enough to figure out individual default settings for different graphics adapter that will still go by the name "Default Setting" but run at different levels of detail etc. Even with manual configuration, it is difficult or impossible to get the same features running since not everything is available for each adapter.
Default Benchmark
The RADEON 8500 outperforms all nVidia cards, however, keep in mind that this is, in fact, comparing apples and oranges
CodeCreatures
One of my favorite benchmarks that puts enough load on the GPU to negate almost any differences in system architecture, as long as there is enough horse power to begin with. CodeCreatures uses DX8.1 pixel shaders that put the GF3 Ti 500 at a serious disadvantage and that is exactly what we will see with future games. CodeCreatures also features a default benchmark running at three different resolutions and then spitting out one score which is exactly what we are not interested in at all. The individual scores of each sub category / resolution are listed as well, though and that is what we are looking at:
1024 x 768 x 32bpp
The Ti500 needs to resort to software rendering and falls hopelessly behind. Both the V8420 and the V8460 impress with performance, especially at a sub US$200 price of the V8420.
1280 x 1024 x 32bpp
It appears as if theory meets practice since memory bandwidth only plays a subordinate role in for CodeCreatures, rather the core frequency and processing power makes the two GF4 adapters outperform the GF3 as well as the RADEON 8500
1600 x 1200 x 32bpp
At 1600 x 1200, the Ti 500 would still run, however, return frame rates higher than at the 1024 x 768 setting while displaying some artifacts instead of grass and water; reason enough to can those results.
