 ASUS RADEON X800Pro to XT
(Review by MS, June 16, 2004)
ASUS RADEON
9600XT At:

Comanche4

Comanche4 is, at least at the lower resolutions, mostly limited by memory latencies and raw CPU power. At higher resolution, lower performance graphics cards will start to show an impact on the average frame rate, however, the cards tested here are all of a caliber that makes them almost completely insensitive to resolution increases. The workaround was to add another level of visual complexity by enabling 4 x Antialiasing and 8 x anisotropic filtering in the ATI control panel. The results shown below speak for themselves.

Comanche4

Even with AA / AF enabled, each single graphics card tested here proved faster than the system at the 800x 600 resolution and only at the higher resolutions did we see the differentiation. Pink: RADEON 9800Pro; Blue: GFFX 5900; Yellow: RADEON 9800XT; Turquois: AX-800Pro; Maroon: AX-800Pro (mod).

CodeCreatures

Like Comanche4, CodeCreatures is a DX8 benchmark and, therefore, does not take advantage of DX9 features such as the floating point color precision. Pink: RADEON 9800Pro; Blue: GFFX 5900; Yellow: RADEON 9800XT; Turquois: AX-800Pro; Maroon: AX-800Pro (mod).

CodeCreatures: 4 x AA

In this case, antialiasing was enabled from within the CodeCreatures console. A performance increase of about 30% between the pre- and the post-modded version is very convincing evidence for the enabling of the extra pipeline block. Pink: RADEON 9800Pro; Blue: GFFX 5900; Yellow: RADEON 9800XT; Turquois: AX-800Pro; Maroon: AX-800Pro (mod).
