 ASUS RADEON X800Pro to XT
(Review by MS, June 16, 2004)
ASUS RADEON
9600XT At:

Shipping In Style

The ASUS AX-X800Pro ships in an adaptation of the shipping box we first met in the case of the ASUS RADEON 9800XT, and which does not feature silly pseudo military robots but actually preserves some style, similar to the japanimation cartoons. At least, in this case, even the box is nice to look at, even though the face has changed between different versions of graphics adapters. The top lid of the box can be folded over to reveal a window, through which the actual hardware, that is, the graphics card is visible. Inside the fancy cover is a plain white card box to provide the necessary mechanical stability for the entire shipping assembly.

The Bundle

Whatever is bundled with the ASUS AX-800Pro can be classified into three different categories as there are the hardware bundle, the software and the documentation. The bundled hardware comprises a number of different video adapter cables and dongles from the DVI to VGA Adapter to the different S-video and composite video interface converters and last not least a Y-splitter for the molex connector to supply the power necessary to operate the card.

The actual AX-800Pro appears virtually identical to the ATI reference design for the X800 line of graphics card, at least to the point we were capable of telling from pictures without the actual hardware in our hands.

The hardware bundle is mostly comprised of different cables and adapters but also contains a 300kpixel USB webcam. The documentation encompasses no less than four different manuals starting at the technical documentation and leading over the quick-setup guide and the full installation guide to the software reference manual. All in all, in typical ASUS fashion, the documentation is exemplary. Bundled software features the driver and utility CD, Cyberlink's PowerDirector 3DE, Ulead Cool3D SE3.0, MediaShow SE 2.0 ASUS DVD and for the gamer, DeusEx Invisible War and CounterStrike Condition Zero.
