 ASUS TNT V3400
TNT for ALi?
(Review by RoadRunner, edited by MS, Jan 28, 1999)

Conclusion

The Asus V3400 is a great card and runs more stable on the ASUS P5A than the Matrox G200 which caused intermitent crashes in Netscape. In 2D and 1024x768 I haven’t seen any different image quality than with the G200 but that might change if I would go up in resolutions. For the time being, however at least with my 19" monitor, 1024x 768 is sufficient.

The heatsink / fan combination placed on the chipset makes it quite impossible to overheat the V3400, which, of course doesn’t imply that it absolutely can’t be done Usually I don’t care too much about o/c video card but this time I made an exception, it’s so easy to get it up running faster and with the standard cooling it’s hardly any risk at all. On the other hand it is still surprising that increasing both core and memory clock by about 30% only result in a 2-8% (maximal) increase in performance.

The one really diappointing feature of the V3400 is really the fact that not even ASUS bothers to even mention the SS7 platform and related issues in the manual. At current, my advice for anyone running a P5A motherboard and thinking of switching to a TNT card would be to wait. The hassle of eventually getting it working in OpenGL simply isn’t worth it. If you only want D3D games and 2D, the V3400 is a great choice, actually the only game that was seriously slow with the MGA G200, Delta Force with no V2 support runs fine now so that I think about getting back into that game for some serious death matching now. If the compatibility issues would be solved soon and nVidia releases some better 3Dnow! drivers I might consider getting rid of my Voodoo2 card, but right now I’ll keep it.
