ASUS in Wonder? .... A Flawless Sapphire
(Review by MS, February 18, 2004)
ASUS RADEON
9600XT At:

FinalFantasy

FinalFantasy is to be taken with a grain of salt as a graphics card benchmark, there are too many system limitations playing into the scores. However, within the same test configuration, it is a valid bench that, once again, shows the 9600XT at about 60-70% of the high end card performance.

MDK2

Yellow: GFFX5900; Turquoise: 9800XT; Pink: 9800Pro; Blue: 9600XT

The only thing that really counts here is that even at 1600 x 1200 the average frame rate is still at about 100 fps and anything above that is nice to have but somewhat redundant.

AntiAliasing and Anisotropic Filtering

Yellow: GFFX5900; Turquoise: 9800XT; Pink: 9800Pro; Blue: 9600XT

We switched again to 4 x AA and 8 x AF, with the result that 1280 x 1024 is about where the cutoff would be in real life. In all honesty, it is almost pathetic to even run 16 x 12 resolutions with AA and AF enabled, only 2 years ago there were not even any graphics cards out there that would even support this setting.

CodeCreatures

Yellow: GFFX5900; Turquoise: 9800XT; Pink: 9800Pro; Blue: 9600XT

Codecreatures is another interesting example for the evolution of graphics cards since the 9600XT delivers at 1600 x 1200 x32 bpp about the same performance that the Radeon 8500 had at 1024 x 768.

AntiAliasing and Anisotropic Filtering

Yellow: GFFX5900; Turquoise: 9800XT; Pink: 9800Pro; Blue: 9600XT

Naturally, increasing complexity takes its toll but if it is any consolation, none of the cards is delivering "playable" frame rates at the highest resolution.
